If you’re like me, and you have young children or grandchildren, you’ve probably exhausted most short day trip venues. Don’t get me wrong, there are so many tremendous places to visit around this area and I feel incredibly fortunate to have such fun, educational, and diverse opportunities for summer fun at our doorstep! We certainly have our favorite stomping grounds that never get old, and that we’ll visit time and time again, but every once in a while, we plain ole want something new. I feel compelled to add that the boys have also had plenty of down-time by just hitting the beach, riding bikes, and playing in the yard….but, we like to throw a day trip into the mix once a week.
With a seek and conquer attitude, we hit the road on Monday morning, determined to visit someplace we’ve never been.
Destination: Kimball Farm, Westford.
Just a mere few minutes over an hour away….and loads of fun. Oh, and clean! Our choice was a big success!
Kimball Farm has a bit of everything. Bumper Boats, mini golf, a driving range, Pitch and Putt golf, an indoor arcade, batting cages, a small animal experience highlighting some rescued and orphaned animals, a seafood shack, and, of course, ice cream!
I chose Monday because I had to head “up the line” to Danvers for an errand anyway…so, it was really only a 40 minute drive. Once there, we spent about 3 hours having outdoor fun. We could have easily stayed longer, but we love the driving range and batting cages at Richardson’s Dairy so we skipped those options and focused our fun elsewhere…promising them another trip to Richardson’s soon.
The Bumper Boats were the obvious winner for the boys. I gave the win to the fact that the place was well-cared for, clean, and nicely landscaped and decorated. A big family win all around! Check it out for sure if you don’t mind a short drive!
Well, every season comes to an end and Captain Dusty’s is no exception. With ice cream shops in Manchester, Beverly Farms, Essex and Salem Captain Dusty’s season’s ending days are marked with support and donations to charitable causes.
Friday, October 25, the Manchester store will be open from 12:00PM to 7:00PM and a donation equal to one-half of the days sales will be made to the Wellspring House in Gloucester.
Monday, October 28 will be the last day for the Essex store and again an amount equal to one-half of the days’ sales will be donated to the Wellspring House in Gloucester.
The Salem store will be closing for the season on Monday November 4th and an equal amount of the total ice cream sold will be donated to the Plummer House for Boys.
Finally, the Beverly Farms store is scheduled to hibernate on November 15th, but that date may get pushed up, so check. A donation will be made to the Beverly Boot Straps Food Pantry.

As many of you know, my little ice-cream business KISS on the Neck on Rocky Neck in Gloucester, MA takes tremendous pride not only satisfying the sweet-tooth but encouraging the do-good among its customers.
Last summer, this particular commitment had manifested through the sales of tote-bags, refashioned one by one from empty commercial rice-bags with all the proceeds going back to Senegal to support alternative income-generating projects for urban street-boys known as the Talibé. The overwhelming response to these bags in Gloucester exceeded my expectations and compelled me to return to Senegal this past winter to quarterback the growth of the project.
This film, a year in the making, will unveil our latest development, the K.I.S.S. Tote (Kindly Inspiring Sustainable Solutions) connecting KISS on the Neck Ice Cream with its mission abroad. It is also with great excitement, I announce that the K.I.S.S. Totes have gone on sale this past Memorial Day Weekend at KISS on the NECK and will be available shortly at the Bookstore downtown. This year’s collection, the most mind-blowing yet, is the result of thousands of hours this winter, revamping the designs, incorporating I-friendly pockets, diversifying color selection, strengthening the staying-power and improving the quality and craftsmanship of every product. We also have introduced a small hand-bag, place-mats and boosted our production of wine-sleeves, all refashioned from discarded rice-sac material.
I’m proud of our progress this past year and I am confident you will find the products this summer both exceptionally appealing and downright practical. Furthermore, viewing this film, you will develop a much more concrete understanding how your purchases are being used to support a truly remarkable effort already at work in northern Senegal.
Lastly, I wanted to resound one last thank you to all those who contributed to the JOGGLING project. I crossed the Paris Marathon finish-line at 4 hours exactly, with all three balls, still rotating in motion! We raised nearly $4,000 for Taliberte, the same organization featured in the film.

God almighty do people have to suck the fun out of everything? Can’t they just lighten up and laugh about it? Aren’t there way worse tragedies occurring in the world that could use attention rather than uniting the AFA forces in a fight against schweddy balls ice cream?
Last I checked no one died eating schweddy balls.
I stand firmly behind my large inventory of schweddy balls and would like to endorse the eating of schweddy balls for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
If there were more eating of the schweddy balls ice cream I’m quite confident the world would be a much friendlier place.
See I’m guessing the main problem for the founding fathers and organizers of the AFA schweddy balls boycott is the fact that no one has paid any attention to their schweddy balls in quite some time.
Perhaps if the men and women of the AFA enjoyed a little schweddy ball action instead of thinking up such ridiculous things to boycott, this too would lead to a much happier life.
I’m sure Ben and Jerrys could never pay for the kind of attention that their schweddy balls are getting thanks to the AFA boycott.
So unite normal people who can enjoy a little light hearted fun and go get you some schweddy balls.
Really if anything should be boycotted is any funding to the AFA. It’s a total misuse of money supporting such dopey organizations.
You want to donate to some organizations that can actually help the children of America? How about donating to organizations that help children with terminal cancer or fight child abuse, or drug prevention? I say the boycott should really be started on a far greater abuse and it starts with the abuse of the AFA taking funds which could be used for far greater good on something that matters. Who the fuck would want to attend a meeting where they can’t even appreciate the humor in an ice cream being named "Schweddy Balls" for chrissake anyway?

One of my favorite summer snack-tivities is getting ice cream at Harbor’s Point Ice Cream and snacking while walking along the boulevard toward Blyman Canal to see the bridge open (what an awesome thing about Gloucester!) and watch the boats. I always usually see a cormorant fishing too…
Susan Beaudette, the owner, who gives me new ice cream with a smile when I immediately flop it onto the floor. I love that they do kiddie size too, which really is enough for me to split with my wee son. Enough is an important concept when it comes to ice cream.

It’s All About Ice Cream-Episode #5–Down River Ice Cream
I hope you will make these recipes for ultra dark chocolatey cookies for the “greenhead” ice cream sandwiches and the fantastic toasted pecan cinnamon blondies with they spiced apple compote to make a wonderful sundae with vanilla ice cream! 2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup natural cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon espresso powder
½ teaspoon kosher salt
16 oz. semisweet chocolate (8 oz chopped)
1 cup salted butter
3 cups granulated sugar
4 large eggs at room temperature
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 4 large baking sheets with parchment and set aside.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, espresso powder and salt and set aside.
In a microwave safe dish, melt butter and chopped chocolate in the microwave, about 1 ½ -3 minutes (individual microwave power will vary). Stir until smooth and allow to cool slightly.
In the bowl of a stand mixer or with a hand mixer in a large bowl, combine sugar, eggs and vanilla until well blended and lighter in color. Gradually mix in flour mixture and then chocolate mixture and finally chopped chocolate.
Using a #40 ice cream scoop (about 1 ½”) scoop onto prepared baking sheets, 9 to a sheet. Bake 15-17 minutes in preheated oven until cookies are flat and surfaces are cracked.
To assemble, press a large scoop of mint chocolate chip (or another favorite ice cream) between two cookies
*these cookies keep well in an airtight container for up to a week. You can also make the ice cream sandwiches well in advance, wrap them individually and freeze them until ready to serve.
Cinnamon Pecan Blondies Sundaes with Warm Apple Sauce
2/3 cup salted butter, melted
1 pound light brown sugar (yes, one pound, about 2 1/2 cups)
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ¾ cup all purpose flour
2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
¾ cup cinnamon baking chips
½ cup toasted pecans, coarsely chopped
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 9 x 13 baking dish with nonstick spray and set aside.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt and baking powder. Set aside.
In a large bowl, stir together butter and brown sugar and extract until smooth. Add eggs and stir until combined. Gradually stir in dry ingredients until incorporated. Mix in cinnamon chips and pecans and pour dough into prepared pan. Wet fingers with water and press batter into pan.
Bake 25-30 minutes until center is just set and edges are lightly browned. Allow too cool about ½ hour before slicing. Serve with vanilla ice cream and warm apple sauce. Enjoy!
Warm Apple Sauce (this sauce is great on french toast too!)
4 tablespoon salted butter
2 tablespoons brown sugar
3 cups cooking apples (empire, gala) peeled, cored & sliced or cubed
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
In a large saucepan, melt together butter and brown sugar. Add remaining ingredients and cook for 15-20 minutes or until apples are soft and cooked through. Serve with cinnamon pecan blondies and vanilla ice cream.
To assemble, cut blondies into desired size and place in a serving dish. Top with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream and several spoonfuls of warm apple sauce. Sprinkle with additional toasted pecans if desired. Enjoy!
Blondies keep well tightly wrapped or in an airtight container
