1623 Studios Cape Ann TV building out on Pleasant Street

Change is coming to the streetscape beneath the stunning oriels.

There’s work in progress underway at 11 Pleasant Street downtown Gloucester: 1623 Studios (Cape Ann TV) is building out in the former Cape Ann Art Haven Hive space. I interviewed the station director, Erich Archer, back in 2016 (here) and recall him expressing some street presence downtown as one goal among many. The space on the right of the entrance at 11 Pleasant Street (7 Pleasant Street ,formerly Ruby Wolf) is available to rent.

The building dates from 1882.

William Glover Brown was born in 1854 and emigrated from Scotland in 1872. He worked in Providence before building a business in Milford which he brought to Main Street in Gloucester in 1885. In five years the William G. Brown & Co drygoods moved to a bigger Main Street space.  From Genealogical and Personal Memoirs, ed. Sound Harbor music lessons in Gloucester new location still near Cape Ann Art Haven

With the HIVE move back to the main Cape Ann Art Haven location at 180 Main Street, Sound Harbor needed to relocate, too. Sound Harbor  has moved to the former Falcon’s Nest gallery of the HIVE; enter via the door next to Pleasant Tea or through Browns mall. Musical experiences for little ones: Sound Harbor is starting a hands on baby/toddler music class, too!

Cape Ann Diner is open in Brown’s Mall!

In Brown’s Mall, there is now a new cozy restaurant, the Cape Ann Diner (7 Pleasant Street)! They are currently open 7-2PM, Monday-Saturday (closed on Sunday).

There aren’t big signs outside yet, but they sometimes have a sandwich board outside. The closest entrance/exit is the door between The Hive and the Pleasant Street Tea Co.  I came in that way, and chanced upon some friends who were enjoying a delicious lunch at the diner.

I joined them for a cup of hot cocoa (with a mound of whipped cream) – perfect on a cold early winter day.

The prices are very affordable.  A bowl of the soup of the day – my favorite item on most menus – is just $2.95!  The most expensive item I could find on the lunch menu (all good traditional American fare) is the Burger Bomb – two fresh patties, American cheese, crispy bacon, grilled pepper and onions, bbq sauce and mayo on a grilled seeded bun with lettuce and tomato with choice of potato chips, home fries, or mashed potatoes. All of that for $8.95!  That sounds so good, I am almost drooling on my keyboard.  No, they didn’t bribe me to say that.

If you go in the front door of Brown’s Mall on Main Street, you get to enjoy the decked halls as you head up one flight of stairs towards the back left.

Up the stairs, into the hall, to the right!

The Savory Skillet – Great Breakfast and Lunch

Jerry and Sheila run the Savory Skillet inside  Brown’s Mall.

For lunch I had the summer salad with grilled shrimp, option grilled scallops or chicken.  Excellent!!!

Made with three varieties of lettuce, Cherry Tomatoes, Red Onions, Feta Cheese and cucumbers, and a special dressing that brings all the flavors together.
