PARTY SNAPSHOTS FROM MAYOR SEFATIA’S FABULOUS SCHOONER FESTIVAL WELCOME RECEPTION

The Mayor’s Schooner Festival Welcoming Reception was a fantastic success and wonderful fun. Maritime Gloucester’s dock was overflowing with Schooner Fest friends, well-wishers, and organizers. I think it was the most well attended ever and speaks to the growing success of Gloucester’s Schooner Festival (and to our Mayor’s charisma!).Mayor Sefatia welcomed Governor Baker, Lt. Governor Karen Polito, Schooner Bluenose II Captain Phil Watson and both Representative Ann Margaret Ferrante and State Senator Bruce Tarr were in attendance.

2016 Fishermen’s Memorial Service

There was a respectful area set aside for the participants and families and incredible music. The poignant service made many cry.

I folded some of Pauline Bresnahan’s great photographs into my photos for this post. Thanks for sharing, Pauline, they’re beautiful! I may add in excerpts from Linda Greenlaw’s beautiful tribute – optimism and the program details.

BREAKING SUPER SPECTACULAR EXCITING FIREWORKS NEWS!!!

THE FIREWORKS ARE A GO!!! Hold onto your hats, we’re going to be treated to an extra fantabulous spectacular display!

Barry Pett shares that the response for requests for assistance with the Schooner Festival/Labor Day Weekend fireworks show has been tremendous. He gives a heartfelt thanks to everyone for their contributions. He’d also like folks to be aware that the City contributes greatly, with support from Mayor Romeo Theken’s administration, the Police and Fire Departments, and the DPW.

Barry provided some history about the fireworks, which have been annually displayed from Stage Fort Park since at least 1880. This beautifully poetic Winslow Homer watercolor titled Sailboat and Fourth of July Fireworks, dated July 4th, 1880, was painted during the year that Homer lived on Ten Pound Island. Unfortunately, the painting is currently hidden away in storage at the Fogg Art Museum. It is Barry’s hope that for Gloucester’s quadricentennial the painting will travel to Gloucester and be displayed at the Cape Ann Museum.

Barry Pett has been creating Gloucester’s fireworks shows for over twenty five years.

SAVE OUR FIREWORKS!

TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT THE DECISION WILL BE MADE. PLEASE DONATE TODAY. THANK YOU!!

HELP SAVE THE FIREWORKS!

WITHOUT AN INFUSION OF DONATIONS MADE BY FRIDAY AT MIDNIGHT, the Schooner Festival/Labor Day weekend fireworks will be cancelled. Gail McCarthy, senior staff writer for the Gloucester Times, reports that Barry Pett, who heads the Gloucester Fund and has organized Gloucester’s fireworks shows for the past 25 years, shares that there is only $4,000.00 in the kitty when approximately $12,500.00 is needed. Insurance costs alone are $1,000.

I think we can do this! I just made my donation on the Gloucester Fund’s website FIREWORKS page here. You can donate with all the usual credit cards as well as through PayPal. Or send a check to the following address with the memo “Fireworks”

GHS cool Class of 1971: Who did this?

Were you there? Who did you go with? Who organized the line up? Who did the poster?

Do you have photos?

How did I get here? The Gloucester High School gym was named after Albert Bacheler, as in the former Principal and owner of the very special Civil War era coat needing restoration. We’ve heard from Gloucester graduates and former teachers with no recollection of the coat. We’ve also heard from some that remember seeing it. Thanks to Barry Pett and Ken Joyce for adding in details. I’m looking for interior photographs of the old gym, especially those showing the cadet side where we’ve been told the coat was featured. On this poster it’s simply G.H.S. Gym.

Barry Pett’s graduation year made me think of 1970s high school concerts held in gyms, and there you have it: off road research and fun side trips.

Butterfly Courtyard with Native Dogwood (Cornus florida)

Thank you so much to everyone who came to the Willowdale Estate Artist Spotlight Garden Tour Monday night. We had an absolutely wonderful turnout. I would especially like to thank Senator Bruce Tarr who, although he could not make it, sent his liaison, Gloucester’s Barry Pett. Mr. Pett is Senator Tarr’s Director of Community Outreach and Constituent Services, and also has a background in architecture. He lives in a historical Queen Anne on Middle Street and was especially appreciative of Willowdale, which is a stunning example of an exquisitely restored Arts and Crafts stone mansion.

Thank you Briar and Sarah for your gracious hospitality and for all that you did to make last night’s event such a singing success. There were gift bags for all who attended and the staff prepared a wonderful array of Briar’s signature cookies, as well as a delicious selection of fruit and cheese, topped with a favorite sparkling wine!

Fisherman’s Memorial Service Notice from Barry Pett

From Barry Pett-

Joe,
Just thinking, our Fisherman’s Memorial Service is this Saturday, procession from the Legion at 5pm, followed by the service at the statue from about 5:15 til 6pm. Everyone is welcome, and those who come to the service could just stroll up to Main Street for the Block Party. Maybe you could post a notice here?
And FYI, Josie (Orlando) Russo and Grace (Orlando) Burbridge will be our speakers this year, it will be an extremely emotional and timely service.
Thanks again for the GMG blog …….. and the Block Parties ……….woohoo ;) !!
