TICKETS ON SALE NOW FOR ANNISQUAM VILLAGE PLAYERS MAMMA MIA!

This summer Annisquam will be transformed into a brilliantly-hued Greek island, as the AVP produces one of the most popular musicals of the Broadway stage, Mamma Mia!.  The jukebox musical romantic comedy is based on the songs written by ABBA, an internationally beloved Swedish pop/dance group active from 1972 to 1982. The title of the musical was taken from the 1975 chart-topper song “Mamma Mia.”

The musical opened in London in April 1999 and in New York in October 2001, becoming the ninth longest running Broadway show.  The Broadway opening was shortly after 9/11, and many found the show to be an affirmation of life in the midst of the destruction of 9/11. The show became a major motion picture in 2008 (filmed on the Greek island of Skopelos), and a sequel named Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was released last year.  It is one of the few major musicals where the songs, popular worldwide since the 1970s, predated the show and the movie. Many audience members will recall as teens singing such megahits as “Dancing Queen,” “Super Trouper,” “Mamma Mia,” “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!,” “Waterloo,” and “The Winner Takes It All.” We will not be surprised to see our audiences singing and dancing in the aisles of the Village Hall this summer.

The show tells the story, through the ABBA music, of a young woman (Sophie), raised by her mother (Donna) in the Greek islands, and engaged to be married to her fiancé (Sky), seeking to find her father to walk her down the aisle.  After reading her mother’s diary, she discovers that there are 3 possible contenders (Sam, Bill and Harry), all of whom she invites to the wedding.

AVP MAKES A FABULOUS SPLASH WITH “SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN”

Bravo and a standing ovation to the entire cast and crew of AVP”s “Singin in the Rain!!!” Don’t miss this wonderful romantic musical comedy playing Tuesday through Sunday at the Annisquam Village Hall.

“Singin’ in the Rain” is adapted from the 1952 movie of the same name. Set in Hollywood during the late 1920s, the musical tells the story of romantic leading man Don Lockwood, his best friend Cosmo Brown, struggling actress Kathy Seldon, and Lockwood’s leading lady Lina Lamont, whose hilarious voice makes her an unlikely candidate to star in talking films.

The Annisquam Village Players have once again outdone themselves with a fantastic cast of local talent, stellar directing, musical orchestration, choreography, sets, costumes, and lighting. New this year are Rick Blue’s filmed “talkies,” charmingly telling the story of the end of silent films and the coming era of talking pictures.

A witty and zany comedy, the play is perfectly cast. Leads Rockport High School senior Ben Fuller (Lockwood) and Gloucester resident and recent Pingree School graduate Andrew Murdock (Cosmo Brown) are a dynamic comic duo, with exceptional singing and dancing chops. The lovely Emily Whalen (Kathy Seldon), also a recent Pingree School graduate, sings and dances her way into Lockwood’s heart. She is the perfect antidote to Lina Lamont, the brash and villainous diva played by Victoria Fortune.

Behind the scenes star John Hentschel

It was wonderful to see old friends Mary and Jaye, and set designer Chicki with John and Jolene Hentschel.

Tickets may be purchased on line at annisquamvillageplayers.org or at the Annisquam Exchange.

GLOUCESTER’S HANNA ANDERSON AND MASK RENASCENCE

The mask that Mayor Sefatia wore at the International Women’s Day celebration was created especially for her by Gloucester’s own Hanna Anderson. Hanna was the costume designer for the Annisquam Village Player’s Peter Pan. The Mayor was so proud to show off her beautiful mask. Usually kept in a protected place at her home, she was thrilled to have the opportunity to wear it once again. The Mayor wanted to be sure to give Hanna a huge shout out for her exquisite design.

Since designing costumes for AVP’s Peter Pan, Hanna is still involved in the theatre arts however, she is now performing and designing her own costumes. She is an aerial silk performer working in San Diego. Michelle Barclay, Hanna’s Mom, sent along these photos.
