Gloucester varsity soccer is out in the first round of the conference series. Lynnfield 1 Gloucester 0. Gloucester Daily Times Nick Curcuru coverage accompanied by Kirk R. Williamson photos here
“…From there, Gloucester adjusted by switching to three strikers. But Lynnfield countered that by bringing back a fifth defender to clog up the passing lanes.
“We knew adding an extra striker would put some extra pressure on their defense,” Marnoto said. “And it did but they added an extra defender and when they won the ball they got it out wide. That gave them time to regroup and kept us from getting into our shape.” Both goal keepers were also a factor.” – Nick Curcuru excerpt

This weekend is a big weekend for Cape Ann Youth Hockey! It is the annual Sal Grasso Memorial Tournament. Each year, since 1987 (there may have been couple of years taken off in the middle) teams from Cape Ann play in a tournament against teams from Westmount in Montreal, Canada. Programs alternate between traveling to the opposing host city each Veteran’s Weekend in November. This year Montreal teams will be traveling to us and we are excited to host their players and families.
Families who have been a part of Cape Ann Youth Hockey will tell you that the camaraderie off the ice between teammates, friends, and families is just as important as any game play that takes place on the ice…if not more. Hockey is a commitment… to say the least. There are long weekends spent in cars, early morning wake ups, and expenses that are sometimes quiet hard to believe, but….through it all, the highs and the lows, shines the Sal Grasso Memorial Friendship Tournament.
Opening ceremonies take place on Friday at 4:30 and will continue all weekend long until the 3:00 pm closing ceremonies on Sunday. Please stop by and cheer on our home teams.
Sportsmanship, friendship, and teamwork are at the heart of it all, but both programs will tell you that winning is nice too. The Westmount teams, unbelievably, took the trophy for the tournament’s first 14 years in a row! Since then, Cape Ann has won seven and Westmount five.
Montreal won the tournament last year. Cape Ann is looking to keep the cup here in Gloucester Sunday afternoon. Full stands and local support will certainly help that cause.

This tradition is important to Cape Ann Youth Hockey and the City of Gloucester. Please come to Talbot Rink this weekend to cheer on our teams and to welcome our friends from Westmount.
Friends of CAYH, Paul T. Russo and Shawn Grasso will be dropping the ceremonial pucks for the first games.
Let’s fill the stands!!!
The hawks we typically see in our neighborhood have been somewhat scarce lately but recently have returned. I love that they seem to accompany me on my walks, so I call them my “Walk-Hawks”. The hope of spotting them pushes me out the door for the walk on days I might be reluctant.
I tested my laptop’s onboard webcam from home yesterday in an area of our house that has not-great wifi. The results were decent (see the resulting stream below) but I concluded that if I used the laptop plugged into the router instead of relying on the wifi connection that the results would be way better. So now I’m at the dock and I ran speed tests on my ethernet wired PC, my new iPhone and my old LG V20 android phone.
The internet speed test results between my wired desktop and untethered wifi cellphones were very similar which I find odd.
Ethernet connected PC download speed 30.05/ Upload 5.85
Iphone over wifi download speed 29.4 upload 5.75
Android Phone LG V20 over wifi download speed 28.57/ upload 5.96
In the live streaming test I did last night on the wifi Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 the quality of the stream was decent even though it was rerecorded in a part of the house where the internet is spotty.
I don’t want to spend money for the sake of spending money but I want to try a higher quality webcam connected directly to the ethernet on my PC and see if that gets much better results and eliminate the pixelation. In theory it should but now after doing the speed tests showing my cellphone and wired ethernet connection are practically the same, I’m unsure if there’s going to be a noticeable difference.
