You’ve heard of a food truck, but what about a food boat? On Thursday August 22nd, from 3:00 to 6:30, the Cape Ann Farmers Market (CAFM) at Stage Fort Park will host Eating with the Ecosystem’s 19-foot ‘food boat’ for a fun, educational, and delicious interactive seafood event. The food boat is part of Eating with the Ecosystem’s Scales & Tales program, which blends food experiences with education to promote a place-based approach to sustaining New England’s wild seafood. Featuring the culinary skills of Chef Aaron Budak from Tonno, the boat will provide cooking demos showcasing a local seafood species. As market patrons enjoy free samples of the delicious dishes created, they will have the opportunity to ask questions as well as be informed on how to help support local fishing communities. Copies of Eating with the Ecosystem’s recently released eco-cookbook Simmering the Sea: Diversifying Cookery to Sustain Our Fisheries will be available for purchase ($20). Eating with the Ecosystem is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to promote a place-based approach to sustaining New England’s wild seafood, though healthy habitats, flourishing food webs, and short, adaptive supply chains. Eating with the ecosystem envisions a local seafood marketing system that mirrors ecosystem dynamics, supports and engages community-based fishermen, and creates system resilience through positive feedback loops between the people who eat seafood and the ecosystems that produce it. By introducing new mental models for food system planning and new avenues for consumer engagement, it works to replace a piecemeal and reductionist view of sustainability with a systems-based, place-bound template for sustainability that serves the long-term benefit of New England’s people and ecosystems.
