HUNDREDS OF SQUID WASHED ASHORE AT LIGHTHOUSE BEACH IN ANNISQUAM

Friends Bobbi and Pete Kovner sent in the snapshots from this morning. I didn’t go over to see because Bobbi reported back that the seagulls were eating the squid.

The photos show just a portion of the beach, there were actually much more.

Does anyone have an idea as to why there were so many squid at Lighthouse Beach. Thank you so much for writing if you do!

  1. I remember that after the hurricanes in the early 50’s that beach was covered with squid and the Portuguese from downtown came and cleaned and took them home for dinner.

  2. Remembering when I was 10, I am now 72, there were tons of squid on Lighthouse Beach and in the water. Have no idea why there were so many.

  3. We found a pile of squid on lighthouse beach 2 weeks ago too. Thought that maybe they were left over bait but this amount is crazy!

  4. Squid is attractive to lights also the squid might be feeding on small vertebrates on waves breaking on the shore????

  5. Considered these possibilities also but then I noticed that the head of one squid was neatly cut off.
They were beginning to smell when sea gulls arrived and made a quick meal of them!
