Vanessa Michalak explores ideas about escapism, adventure and humanity’s relationship with nature in her expressionistic paintings of Cape Ann, created in plein air. Inspired by local Cape Ann landscapes, Michalak’s figures move through forests forcing viewers to make their way through overgrown paths. Structures within the landscape allude to impermanence or interactions with the environment. By allowing herself to get a “little lost in the woods” she teeters on the edge between abstraction and representation, which she calls an “adventure on new paths”. Each painting becomes a unique journey that ultimately becomes, not only a reflection of her inner restlessness, but her longing to reconnect with nature while fulfilling her incessant investigation of the painting process.
A Maine native, Vanessa Michalak earned her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting in 2013. She was awarded the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in Painting in 2014 and her work was included in New American Paintings issue #110. Her work has been included in several exhibitions including the MFA National Competition, juried by Asya Geisberg, First Street Gallery, New York, NY. She has also participated in numerous residencies, most notably, Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, CO and PLAYA, in Summer Lake, Oregon. In 2016 she was the emerging artist in residence at Penn State, Altoona for Spring semester. She currently lives and works in Gloucester, MA.
