Email from GMG FOB

“Hi Manny,
I’m Kevin Henry and a longtime FOB GMG.  Joey knows me and he’s posted a lot of my shots over the years.  I live in NJ and have been shooting fishermen here for years.
My girlfriend Vanessa saw your shot of these 3 gents on GMG the other day and sent it to me right away.
We were on the Asbury Park boardwalk 8-9 years ago and came across 3 gents on a beautiful Spring day.  Click !
Look closely and factor in the passage of time.  Yeah, I think so !
I’ve cropped it a bit and I’ll send the original. “

Stuffed and Breaded Chicken On The @WeberGrills Go-Anywhere

Northeast BBQ

Mix sour cream, parmesan cheese, basil paste, feta and sun dried tomatos for the stuffing.

20180928_111106

Roll 1/4 inch thick EVOO coated chicken breast (pound flat between two pieces of wax paper) around the stuffing, secure with toothpicks then coat with Italian bread crumbs.

I used a deflector plate.  Under which I put a half a Weber chimney of lit coals on the opposite side of the grill where the chicken would go.  Vents all wide open.

Cook for 25 minutes until chicken is golden brown.

Read more about the exhibition and the artist from printed matter announcing the show:

“When you go into the Woods,” features oil paintings by Vanessa Michalak highlighting some of Cape Ann’s well known gems. Works depict imagery of a variety of places including Annisquam Village, Lanesville’s Vernon Quarries and Babson’s Dogtown boulders. The exhibition will be on display throughout October at Jane Deering Gallery, Gloucester, MA with and opening reception scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6th from 6pm-8pm.

The Exhibition, “When You Go Into The Woods” is a reflection of Michalak’s exploration of Cape Ann and her ongoing investigation of the painting process. The works reflect a fascination with a specific place and its hidden treasures. Many of the works are plein air paintings that brought her to the edges of quarries and sent her trekking through Dogtown’s rocky paths. As much as these works pay tribute to a specific place, they also reflect Michalak’s gestural painting style that at times borders on abstraction. Much like her wanderings in the woods, there is a sense that she doesn’t mind getting a little lost in brushwork, layering and mark before finding her destination.

Vanessa Michalak grew up in Maine before moving to Boston where she lived and worked for over a decade. While living in Boston she visited Cape Ann often and eventually moved to Gloucester last year. She received an MFA in painting from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 2013. Residencies include: Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Snowmass Village, CO; Emerging Artist-in-Residence, Penn State, PA;  and Playa, Summer Lake, OR. Michalak’s work was featured in New American Paintings #110 and Fresh Paint Magazine (cover artist 2014). She was selected as a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow in Painting in 2014.spring woods Annisquam 2018.jpg.png Continue reading ““When you go into the Woods” solo art exhibition by Vanessa Michalak opens Oct. 2nd at Jane Deering Gallery”

Farewell White Elephant

Antiquing is one of our favorite pastimes. It tickles me to re-use items from my grandmother’s era. Essex is full of shops, but for one less now.  We will miss the White Elephant. It sure looks different now that it’s been sold and closed up.

IMG_5295

It leaves a bit of a hole, but there are certainly other shops on our favorites list.  These include a couple in Essex such as Farmhouse Gatherings (not open often, but worth the stop) and the Flying Dragon. Keep your eye on the changing message in the window.

But our sentimental favorites are right on Main Street Gloucester: Main Street Art and Antiques is entertaining. I especially like to look at the old photos and photo albums. Dogtown Books might not technically be an antique store, but it remains at the top of my browsing list. I camp out in the local history corner of the store. I guess I just love spending time in the past! Thank you to all who mind and run these shops. I’m sure it’s an act of love.
