Doing my 400th anniversary homework: two new books purchased one through ebay: The Gloucester Book by Frank L. Cox and the other purchased at Dogtown Books–a souvenir program Gloucester and Cape Ann the Beautiful. Word about the 400th is out there!
Burano is an island off of Torcello, which is off of Murano, which is off of Venice which is off of the Italian mainland. It is an amazingly colorful place.

The 1917 Gloucester City Directory indicates the hours the Post Office is open: 6:45 AM to 8 PM (!!!!) AND on Sundays 2-4 PM. No wonder there were so many clerks and carriers.
Also, 5 mail pick ups per day!
These appear to be mailboxes perhaps from those years, still in use today.
Those were the days, we might sigh to ourselves. However, upon reflection, I begin to consider that technology has allowed 24/7 online access to a number of mail or shipping options. Technology has also allowed for text messages and emails to overtake physical letters, notices, bills etc. in speed and convenience. What a difference this past century has made!!
