For this year’s Thanksgiving apple pies I decided to add some Idareds to the mix of Granny Smiths and Fujis; keeping my fingers crossed that they’ll be extra delish. Happy Baking!

Fallstreak Hole at Good Harbor

fallstreak hole

Update:  This is a photo taken by Deb Schradieck at Good Harbor Beach.  She got her photo at an earlier stage than mine, before the hole had started to fill in, so you can really see how amazing it looked.

I stumbled upon a fallstreak or hole punch cloud on the internet earlier this week.  It was something I had never seen before and thought it was pretty cool looking.  Today, this one was hanging right over Good Harbor Beach!

A fallstreak hole, also known as a hole punch cloud, punch hole cloud, skypunch, canal cloud or cloud hole, is a large circular or elliptical gap that can appear in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds. Such holes are formed when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing but the water has not frozen yet due to the lack of ice nucleation (see supercooled water). When ice crystals do form it will set off a domino effect, due to the Bergeron process, causing the water droplets around the crystals to evaporate: this leaves a large, often circular, hole in the cloud.[1]

It is believed that the introduction of large numbers of tiny ice crystals into the cloud layer sets off this domino effect of evaporation which creates the hole. The ice crystals can be formed by passing aircraft which often have a large reduction in pressure behind the wing- or propeller-tips. This cools the air very quickly, and can produce a ribbon of ice crystals trailing in the aircraft’s wake. These ice crystals find themselves surrounded by droplets, grow quickly by the Bergeron process, causing the droplets to evaporate and creating a hole with brush-like streaks of ice crystals below it. The articles by Westbrook and Davies (2010)[2] and Heymsfield et al. (2010) [3] explain the process in more detail, and show some observations of their microphysics and dynamics. Such clouds are not unique to any one geographic area and have been photographed from many places.

Because of their rarity and unusual appearance, as well as very little exposure in media, fallstreak holes have been mistaken for or attributed to unidentified flying objects.[4]

Cape Ann Vernal Pond team Update

Rick Roth writes,

We had a nice exhibit at the Sustainability Fair at the Gloucester High Field House a couple weeks ago.  Lots of cool stuff, solar power, wind power and much more.  Thanks to Colleen Anderson for working at the event and Ashley Gullett for inviting us.

But… I gotta tell you this part:
At one point in the day, I was speaking with one of the visitors to our display, when I realized how tired I was of being on my feet, since it had been several hours by then.  Well, I went to sit down on one of our coolers (we always have coolers at our shows because we transport our animals in them) and I neglected to calculate correctly the trajectory of my hind end so that my center of gravity ended up well behind the cooler.  Soon, very soon, the cooler and I were both upended onto the floor, at which point, my momentum carried me into one of our display panels (seven feet tall and six feet wide, wooden frame, rather heavy) and sent it on a crash course toward one of the young ladies at the exhibit next to us.  At this point, Colleen was kind of screaming “watch out, watch out”.  The exhibit lady turned around just in time to catch the falling panel, with the help of the guy with the clear plastic house model with some sort of heat exchanger in it, who happened to be walking by at the moment.  I was still buns up on the floor, but a catastrophe was averted.  But… do you see what you miss when you don’t show up for these events?

That was probably our last show of 2015.  We are already booking shows for next year.  We have a newsletter to put out.  And we need some more members for our Fundraising Committee.  So please volunteer for one of those activities.  And, we need to add a two or three people to our Board of Directors.  Lots to do in the “off season” so please get in touch and volunteer for us.

Thanks,  Rick

Remember last February? We do. We committed to get the Hell out of New England this winter – and now we are. We are partnering with our longtime friend and Master Teacher Patty Ivey of Down Dog Yoga in Washington DC to offer a winter getaway to the magical Pacific Coast of Mexico.

We’ve been on this trip before and as we were being shown our room we saw a whale breaching just off the shore! The food is delicious, the sights and culture are incredible, and the new people you will meet are top shelf. Whether you are a yoga teacher, experienced student, brand new beginner, or someone with a spouse who loves yoga, this trip will benefit your health, happiness, and tolerance for January, March, and April.

Between lounging on the beach, surfing, whale watching, Puerto Vallarta, an infinity pool, and nearby attractions there is plenty to entertain…
