Our beautiful Gloucester community is the inspiration for Buona Fiesta! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who appears in the film. I love it when you see me and smile and wave—it just adds another layer of fun to the film!
Buona Fiesta! begins with the opening of the Friday night ceremony at Saint Peter’s Square. The statue of Saint Peter, the patron saint of fishermen, is processed around the American Legion Building (Gloucester’s first City Hall), with the parade ending in a fanfare of confetti and cheers at Saint Peter’s Square. Joe Novello is the host for the formal opening ceremony of the 2014 Saint Peter’s Fiesta.
Highlights from the Friday and Saturday Greasy Pole events are followed by the Sunday morning Mass and the procession through the city streets to Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, and then back to Saint Peter’s Square. Tradition has the rallying Sunday Greasy Pole Walkers joining the feast well underway at the Giambanco childhood home, before heading over to the Gloucester House Restaurant and Saint Peter’s Club for liquid encouragement. Highlights from Sunday’s Greasy Pole are followed by the midnight closing ceremony. Saint Peter and followers process around the Fort and are greeted with more confetti and a beautiful fireworks display over the water. As Saint Peter is safely tucked back into the window at the Saint Peter’s Club, all wish him good night with cheers of Viva San Pedro…until next year’s Buona Fiesta!
You’ll see all three Greasy Pole winners take their flags, Mark Allen, Kyle Barry, and Jack Russ; the Giambanco sisters, Sefatia, Rosaria, Marianne, and Grace, who provide a Saint Peter’s Feast for the entire community; House Representative Ann Margaret Ferrante, State Senator Bruce Tarr, Mayor Kirk, Melissa Cox; Oar’Dacious teammates and sisters, Janelle Sleepy Pallazola Puopolo, Leanne Pallazola, and Jamie Pallazola; Salvi Benson’s final Greasy Pole Walk; Nicky Avelis; Steven Le Blanc almost capture the flag; Crazy Hat Ladies, sisters Robyn and Amy Clayton; and many, many more.

The Moolongz have now colonized earth. They are everywhere. This is a colony at Niles Beach in Gloucester. Whenever the Moolongz encounter a human that cannot see or hear them, they hover around that person, intently focusing these thoughts at them:
“You are a unique and unrepeatable miracle of creation, possessing all the power within you needed to create the most amazing version of your life that you can imagine. Have no doubts or fear; just know you were born for greatness, love, joy and every good thing your heart desires. Know it, believe it, be it, share it.”
The Moolongz are there beside you, loving you, encouraging you, and patiently waiting for the day when they hear you say:
“I see Moolongz”.
Can you see Moolongz?

I’m psyched that Willie “Loco” Alexander is joining me this week! Forget this “Godfather” jazz: Willie is the real deal. Anybody with this kind of history is my kind of guy. His jackhammer style spackles all the cracks in the real rock ‘n’ roll pantheon. Makes me feel 20 again!
He’ll be bringing his longtime guitarist, Mr. Billy Loosigian, the phlegmatic, articulate articulator of artifice with him along with that cackling, lightning cracker, Mr. Steve Chaggaris, on the skins. I’ll be on bass, as usual. Stick that safety pin in your brain and dream about the days you never lived through! Hours:8:30 to 11:30.

Sadly, I’m not sure how many of us have not been somehow touched by at least one form of this nasty disease, and surely no one needs me to try to wax poetically about how wretched it is.
So, I’ll try to keep this short.
Someone who once meant the world to me lost his battle with cancer back in May. His fight was sadly, and yet thankfully, all too brief and he was gone, I believe, before many were able to completely wrap their heads around the fact that they may lose him. I felt his loss in weird ways…and kind of lonely ways. It had been many years since we were close and, having gone in slightly different directions, I didn’t really have anyone to share my memories of him with after he was gone. Much of my sadness was actually for the MANY friends and loved ones who were still fiercely close to him and who had to feel the sudden loss of him from their immediate lives….as opposed to a life that they shared a number of years earlier, like mine. I couldn’t help but lay awake at night and hurt for his family, his girlfriend, his teammates, and his incredibly close circle of friends. The thought of his dog not understanding where he was stung me significantly. But, I missed him too…even though it felt selfish.
But this post isn’t intended to be about me….or even solely about him….it is about everyone who has had cancer detonate their world. You know what, this post is actually for anyone who hasn’t been rocked by the “c” word also.
This weekend, August 2nd (what would have been his 45th birthday) and August 3rd mark this year’s Pan-Mass Challenge. The PMC has been raising money for the fight against cancer since 1980 and, in those three plus decades, riders have raised over $400 million. As they say, “Closer By the Mile” towards a cure. I have had the honor of photographing the PMC for the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox organization has had its own team of riders, Team 9, out riding for a cure for many years. They are also unwavering supporters of Dana-Farber and The Jimmy Fund. Being witness to such camaraderie during the course of the 2 day ride has been beyond moving.
I have donated, in very modest ways, since 2004. Not every year, but most years. Each year, in the hopes of being able to donate more the following year. This year I have sponsored 3 amazing, dedicated, and humble riders. Three riders who are riding to celebrate loved ones and to be proactive in the fight against this heinous disease. Three riders who I am incredibly motivated by and proud of. If you do not know anyone riding this year, you can still donate.
So, if you’ve been thinking that you’d like to be charitable…or more charitable as the case probably is for many of you…there is still time.
I happened upon Peter painting a few weeks back near the lily pond on Eastern Avenue, and I just had to stop and see what he was working on. I was stunned at the beauty of his work. This is one of many pieces you can find at the TRIBUTE EXHIBITION at the North Shore Arts Association going on July 30th through August 10th. The big reception is tonight from 6-8pm!! Peter was as kind, and as talented, as you would imagine. There will be amazing work from many other artists as well. For more info go to http://www.nsarts.org NOW GO SUPPORT AND CELEBRATE OUR LOCAL ART STARS!!!!
My boy Erik Lorden loves to cook with charcoal. He feels that it gives better heat and flavor. For me it’s a big PITA and when I’m hungry it’s a gas grill for me.
What type of grill do you use? Which do you wish you used and why?
Not gonna lie those big green egg things seem like the coolest thing ever.
Now that I think of it we need to have a BBQ contest don’t we?
Where in the city can you grill outdoors without some special kind of permit and we could have a BBQ contest?
