HOT TIP: RUN, DON’T WALK, TO THE LAST STOP VARIETY!

Sandy Last Stop ©Kim Smith 2013Sandy, Owner (with husband Gene), and Maker-of-All-Deliciousness at Last Stop

Sandy at Last Stop Variety in East Gloucester is making the most delicious pumpkin spice doughnuts you could ever possibly imagine. They are sweet, tender, and cinnamony spicy–with no skimping on a dusting of powder sugar–and delightfully warm.

The past few mornings, after standing still for hours and shivering in the cold marsh since daybreak, I have been stopping in at the Last Stop and it has been my good fortune to arrive just as Sandy is taking the doughnuts off the griddle. If you like Russell Orchards apple cider doughnuts, which my family adores, these are AT LEAST TEN TIMES BETTER!

World Series & Rock Music — a “Partnership”

Fox Sports says Eddie Vedder is a diehard Chicago Cubs fan?!?!?!?

In this day and age when rock stars “partner” with big corporations, you wouldn’t expect MLB to be left out, would you?  Of course not.  48 songs from 90s mega-stars Pearl Jam will “soundtrack” (yes they actually use this word as a verb on their website) the 2013 World Series.  There was a time when Pearl Jam was one of only a handful of touring artists that could guarantee to sell out an arena.  The band is on tour again and it makes me wonder who benefits more from this partnership — MLB or Pearl Jam?

Closer to home, local venues are changing their live music schedules knowing that many — if not most of their customers will want to watch the World Series, which begins tonight.  Minglewood Tavern cancelled live music for tonight and tomorrow.

The Rhumb Line moved guest host Allen Estes (filling in for Fly Amero, who’s on tour with Orleans) to 4:30.  He and Orville Giddings will get fans revved up for the game, which starts at 7:30.

John Rockwell will be at Alchemy as scheduled for Ladies Night (telling?)

Henry Allen makes his final appearance at Midori tonight during the game — perfect for those of you who hope the Sox win, but don’t really care to watch.

Whether or not you plan to watch the World Series, you can get a complete listing of local live music with up-to-the minute schedule changes here.

Just My Rant. Have you heard the word Today.

This post was not made to make fun of anyone’s religious beliefs. I believe more like the Native Americans do that nature controls the Universe and our lives. I recently had a very nice older couple come to our door trying to save my soul. They were very polite. When they started to inform me how a certain prophet could make my life better I began to inform them that I appreciated their trying to help people by spreading their beliefs but I don’t believe in what the were selling. Like I said I respect everyone’s beliefs and do not try to push mine on anyone else. They continued to try to have me come over to their side. After a few minutes of this I decided to inform them how in the past two years what our family has been through. I told them how my Son Paul was killed and how he died and less than 3 months later my Father died. They looked kind shocked.  After a few minutes of a rant  I apologized for dropping all that on them and that I respected their views but it wasn’t for me. They politely said goodbye, turned around and got out as soon as they could.

I found these religious comics that people post on Facebook. So Blame them not me.

The fish are sorted into what were called checker boxes, to separate the cod by size and quality. Todays fishermen uses boxes or totes. Careful packing of the fish with ice is important to avoid physical damage and spoilage, in order to get the best price.
