Did You Know? (Bull Wrestling Can be Deadly)

On September 18, 1892, long after Dogtown had ceased to exist as a community, James Merry died in Dogtown.  He had a 3-year-old bull that he had previously successfully wrestled to the ground on a few occasions.  He decided to try it again.  This time the bull was having no part of it.  The first marker shows where James Merry was first attacked by his bull.  The second marker, a short distance away heading toward Dogtown Road, is where James Merry died of his injuries.

The Women’s Guild is getting ready for the big Christmas Fair at St. Ann’s Church in Holy Family Parish (as announced on this blog). Here are some photos of the preparations, and some shots of merchandise:

The tables run almost the full length of the hall, and many are already almost full
Bea Ciaramitaro is the organizer, who has been working hard to bring it all together
All sorts of things are available, including secular winter items...
...and religious articles for year-round use...
...and religious Christmas decorations...
...all set up by the Women's Guild elves! (Here, setting up the jewelry table)
They are climbing ladders to be sure that everything is of the "highest" quality, even the hall decorations!

There are also religious and secular books, and much more! Come check it out on Saturday, Nov. 19, 9AM-2PM, in the Parish Hall under St. Ann’s Church, at 60 Prospect St. in Gloucester!

Happy Birthday To One Of My Greatest Presents Of 2011- Our Friend EJ

image

I can’t begin to tell you how much EJ has brought to our lives.  Her positive energy, her photo and video contributions, her expert handling of the GMG Gallery this past summer at Rocky Neck, the hosting of the Mug-Ups but mostly her friendship.

EJ brings so much to us every day and is such a kindred spirit in that she has the best of all worlds, the compassion of an artist and the  organizational sense and responsibility of a business person.

EJ, thank you for coming into my life as such a great friend to not just me but the entire GMG community.  Your friendship has been one of my greatest gifts this past year.

We love you.

Steven Wright Quote of the Week From Greg Bover

“Last year I went fishing with Salvador Dali. He was using a dotted line. He caught every other fish.”
Steven Wright 1955-

Although born in New York, comedian, actor and writer Steven Wright is a rabid Sox fan. Known for his lethargic voice and deadpan delivery of ironic, philosophical and sometimes nonsensical jokes and one-liners, Wright grew up in Burlington, (as did Amy Poehler). He attended Emerson College, (with Dennis Leary) and began his stand up career around Harvard Square.
